TLS/SSL
TLS: Transport Layer Security is the replacement for SSL. See RFC 2246 for the TLS 1.0 specification.

SSL: Secure Sockets Layer is a security protocol that provides communications privacy over the Internet. See draft302.txt for the SSL 3.0 specification.

The protocols allows client/server applications to communicate in a way that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, or message forgery. BCISGNet uses the OpenSSL library to provide the SSL (v2/v3) and TLS (v1) implemention.
